Studio Services & Recording Tips

Below is a long, but very important Special Note.  It should be read before attempting any first time Recording.

Recording Note:

Often times people think that just because they are recording in a quality studio that their material; Vocals or Instrumental work, is automatically going to sound great, compared to what they record at home.

Most quality studio's have the equipment, room and know-how to give you good quality recordings; But if you think that means YOU, don't put forth the effort you will likely be disappointed with the final result.

Studio recording in any good studio that will give you honest feedback and suggestions can help you greatly improve your project recording quality.  If you have enough money to pay for the time it takes to fix things, most studio's can even make bad recordings sound better.

The proper way to do things, is to discuss your project with your studio engineer or producer and do the things they recommend before you go into the studio to record.  If you do that you can greatly improve the quality of your production and may even reduce the cost of your production.

The bottom line is that the quality and cost are mostly determined by you.  Studio's have the ability to let you hear everything well; the good and the bad.  Hearing the bad is just as important as hearing the good, because it lets you hear what you need to change.

It is generally better to have one recording that you can be proud to play for anyone, anywhere than to have lots of songs on a CD that have bad pitch, bad timing and/or bad instrumentation, etc.  Everyone will not record a perfect performance the first time in a studio.  But if you like to sing or play music you should use each studio session as a learning session to help you make improvements.  Most studio's will offer suggestions to help you make improvements.

No mater how good or bad you sing or play, the money you spend in the studio is best spent on recording your material in the best pitch and time you can and on your mixes and edits.  Professional Studio's have the ability to record with good quality.  What makes the difference on even the best initial recordings is the work that goes into the edits and the mix.  Most Professional Studio's will spend at least 1.5 hours or more on Editing and Mixing for every hour of recording time.  For higher quality recordings a lot more time may be required.  Good editing, mixing and mastering will make a Huge difference in almost any recording.

If you are planning to record without allowing sufficient time for editing, mixing and mastering, you might find your finished product doesn't sound much better than your home recording.  If you doubt this I suggest you check a few dozen pro web sites around the planet and see what others have to say.

Many people will go to a studio and record a CD full of songs, as if they were singing karaoke on stage.  They seem to think that just because they are singing in a studio with expensive mic's and equipment, that it's going to sound good.

People listening to a live performance are being entertained by the performer.  If the singer does not sing well and makes pitch and timing mistakes while singing live, but generally has a pleasing voice, the people listening to the live performance may tell them they sound good.  Their small mistakes simply disappear into the live performance.  If those same mistakes are made during a studio recording session and punch in's or other corrections are not made the final CD will not sound good and the customer will usually wonder why.  Good mix downs and edits are required to make most any studio recorded material sound good, or at least as professional as possible.

If you sing 20 songs and only allow the minimum 10 to 15 minutes it normally takes to do a minimal clean up of the song ends, leveling to CD levels, do a quick mix and go through the processes required to put that material onto a CD, with a label, then you are not going to have as good a quality CD as you could have and it will still have taken around 5 hours to do the 20 song quick mix.

Rough mixes usually take a minimum of 30 minutes up to 2.5 hrs. each song, depending on the material, the number of tracks, the quality level desired and how good or bad the initial recording was.

Good Final Master mixes could require a minimum of 1.5 hours per song, up to several hours, depending on the complexity of the material, the quality of the performers work and the final quality level desired.

Good mixes also require making sure your vocals and or instruments notes are in time and on pitch.  Good quality takes more time to make sure the EQ, effects such as reverb, compression, limiting, and many more variables are properly set for each audio track, voice or instrument.  The customer can discuss the options and based on their performance the studio can advise to what degree these things need to be done.

Few professional engineers will simply burn up time to run up a bill.  Doing good mixes and edits is a lot of hard work, and most engineers take pride in what they do no mater how minor or how intense the work gets.  It is well understood that some have a greater need to get it right than others.  Our studio will try to do the best we can within the time the customer allots us.

Having said all of this we also understand that some none professional singers and musicians simply want to record something the best they can to hand down to their family because it's something they like to do.  We will do our best to please each of our customers.
